William Keith (1838-1911) painted this oil-on-canvas painting titled "A Broadside of Mount Tamalpais" in 1870. The photograph, a gift of Mrs. Joseph Tobin to the de Young Museum, was photographed in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
"The Scottish-born William Keith moved to San Francisco in 1859 and developed a lifelong passion for California's landscapes," according to the de Young.
Keith chose the popular subject of mountain scenery, which was popular among European and American artists of that era. My Great-Great-Grandpa Thomas Hill, for whom my middle name is derived, painted many California landscapes.
