"The Chevrolet Corvette has been produced through seven generations," according to Wikipedia. "The first model, a convertible, was introduced at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car.

Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called a corvette.

"Originally built in Flint, Mich. and St. Louis, Mo., the Corvette is currently manufactured in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and is the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky."

With many soldiers returning home from Europe, there was a desire for sports cars.

The Corvette is seen as a U.S. competitor to the numerous European brands that became popular in the 1950s and 1960s.
