California TrailThis is the problematic gate/latch on the California Trail in Carson City that is almost impossible to open in cold weather. It is only easily accessible from the eastern side. How can someone in a wheelchair open it from the western approach?
Does anyone know a solution to having a gate that keeps cattle in but allows people people with physical disabilities to be able easily to use the gate, from both sides? I walk the Carson City California Trail, and one latch is almost impossible for even me (6-4, 210) to open during particularly cold days.
There are two gates with latches only on the east-facing side, meaning a person in a wheelchair may not be able to, or have great difficulty in reaching over and unlatching the gates. It would be impossible for someone on the eastern gate during cold temperatures, unless they are Hercules and have long arms. (The western latch is easy to use; however, someone in a wheelchair would have to reach over the gate to access it. That seems a bit difficult to me. Is that ADA-accessible?)
The wide asphalt trail passes through an active ranching zone, so the gates are needed to keep cattle and horses in. I was thinking of a self-locking gate that people in wheelchairs, the elderly, children could easily use yet be a barrier to cattle. Any suggestions?
