Fixed GateThe city finally fixed the California Trail's eastern gate with a wire that holds the chain that links the vehicle gate to the gate post that also is attached to the latch mechanism for the pedestrian gate.
The California Trail's eastern gate was fixed with a wire that keeps the chain holding the motor vehicle gate to the post above where the pedestrian gate closes flush with the post that is shared by both gates. A simple little wire is all that was needed, but how long that will last is anyone's guess.
Open GateGate left open again on the California Trail. This photo was taken several days before it was fixed and is one of many days the gate has been left open.
From being closed for at least a week or two this winter when not required due to floods or snow, to the gate not being able to close because the chain on the motor vehicle gate kept the pedestrian gate from fully closing, it's fortunate now cattle or horses have escaped the Lompa Ranch onto the California Trail and beyond that to city streets and/or the interstate. Thank you to the city crew that fixed the gate.
I do wonder if both gates could be made easier to open for the disabled. I don't know how easy it would be for people in wheelchairs to attempt to open the gates from the west, since the latches are on the eastern side of each gate. You would have to reach down to open the gate and I'm not sure if all people in wheelchairs could reach over. Maybe a wheelchair-user could leave a comment about whether they can open and close the gates.
