Gate Locked Carson City's California Trail

If you cannot latch the California Trail's eastern pedestrian gate, report it to public works. Please do not endanger the cattle, by allowing them to get loose.Locked GateFor some reason, one of the gates was locked on the California Trail in March. It's unlocked now, but the latch is very, very difficult to latch. Please latch it. If you cannot do so, report it to public works. Please do not endanger the cattle, by allowing them to get loose. The California Trail in Carson City stretches, in part, from Solomon to Airport. It's a beautiful area to walk any time of year, even along I-580. Just bring some headphones, tune out the busy interstate traffic and check out the birds in the reeds along the waterway.

For some reason, one of two pedestrian gates has been locked on the California Trail, much to the consternation of joggers, walkers and bikers. I saw one father lift his daughter over the lower barbed wire, along with their bikes. Senior citizens and some walkers, bikers and joggers not strong enough to lift themselves over the fence have been stopped.

It is particularly beautiful in the snow. Occasionally, one or both the gate are locked. In winter 2023, one gate was locked, which perturbed bikers, joggers and walkers. I just hopped over it, but some people didn't want to.
I just hop over it, but as a former safety officer, I wonder how wise it is for the city to lock the gates. If cattle getting loose is a problem, a solution would be cattle grates, which should have been installed when the gates were installed, along with fencing to prevent cattle from going around the cattle grates. Someone could get injured very easily on icy, snowy and/or slippery bars that form the gate; or, if someone isn't strong enough to lift themselves over the gate, ripping their skin on the lower barbed wire fence that forms the barriers on each side of each gate.

There are no city signs saying the trail is closed and there are no warnings that one will have to climb the gate. There are no courtesy signs for bikers that the gates are closed.

The said, the trail is beautiful in the snow. I've walked it in snow flurries, hot sun, windy conditions and the condition it is in right now: clear. The surrounding views of Eagle Valley and the mountains are magnificent.
